Off-Grid House January 15th, 2021 Off-Grid House by Anacapa is a wonderful example of reconnecting humanities spaces with natural rhythms. Resting within a wildlife preserve, the residence could not rely on city electricity or water, thus the requirement for an off-grid structure was needed. Utilizing solar energy, local well, and a septic system this house functions while remaining comfortable for the owners. The house and garage where physically built within the hillside "planting" the structures amongst the preserve . To allow the landscape to embrace the structure a green roof was installed which expands the grassy hillside. The roofs earthen mass and the hillside significantly reduce the heat absorption of the building. Natural ventilation, radiant floors, temperate coastal weather, and the high earthen mass help reduce the energy stress on the photo-voltaic array, while maintaining a comfortable atmosphere with in the house. The natural materials, textures, and colors embrace the human soul; whispering warmth like a hearth. The material choice presents a warm welcoming atmosphere that feels natural and human. The concrete acts as the anchor to the hill while mimicking the horizontality of earthen layers, the surrounding hills, ocean, and sky, and of the architecture itself. This horizontality and location of this home is very similar to Frank Lloyd Wright's Organic Architecture, reinforcing the natural motif of this design.
